Comparing Advertiser's Brief with Aired Adverts!
Two TV Adverts that I pitched for have recently appeared on British TV.
I won't name them...but it's very interesting in comparing the Agencies "Brief" with the final music
chosen for the advert.
One was an orchestral piece, loosely based on Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and I did quite an in-depth analysis of this classic piece of music and produced what I thought was a suitable tune and arrangement (all within a 30 second length!) that I thought also fitted the brief.
After feedback from the agency, I did two subsequent versions of the tune.
When I saw the final chosen piece of music on TV..... the client had chosen quite a boring un-memorable piece that barely touched on the brief!!!!
The other ad...which features a very well known actress.... ended up using a newish version of a very old tune!
C'est La Vie I suppose.
Until next time..

Touching Base
Had lovely phone call today from a composer friend of mine Steve Wright that I haven't spoken to for many, many years!
He has been very busy composing for the BBC, (His music for chef Raymond Blanc's series was fab!) but finally had a few free moments to chat with yours truly. Time flies by when you are chatting about old friends, music and technology!
Hopefully we might collaborate on some sort of project in the near future, as he is a great guitarist as well as being a great composer and I'm sure we would have fun!
On top of that he's a top bloke too!

Pitching for TV
It's been a while since my last blog (not that anyone reads them anyway?)
Just been pitching for a new national TV Ad campaign, courtesy of one of my London agents.
Full orchestral piece that was great fun to do initially..but the more one adapts to feedback and presents second or third drafts..the harder it becomes and time constraints mean that you don't get very long to sort it out!
Anyway..the pitch is now with the agents and the rest is up to them, hopefully the music fits their brief and now awaiting feedback from the clients!
BTW if you are reading this, why not become my first follower or drop me a line to my email address?
Cheers for now!

Post Wickerman
Well, the Wickerman production finished with great aplomb..with good press reviews. Was nice to be part of history!
Just signed contract with LA based company for some of my music after being approached by them after they found my Soundcloud page.
Found a brilliant percussionist who lives very close to me and am considering either hiring his services or doing a collaboration on a project.
Just started talking to a film company based in Bristol and still have a CD to produce for Hurdy-Gurdy Maestro Cliff Stapleton.

Busy Week!
Tonight is the premier of "The Wickerman" at our local theatre..3 shows, 2 sold-out, not bad for a bunch of amateurs!
Awaiting contracts from LA based company for some of my cues and updating my Mac with more ram in preparation for producing album for Mr. Cliff Stapleton..Hurdy-Gurdy experimentalist.
Also talking with film producers about upcoming projects...

Wi-Fi Networks and iPad
We have had a Wi-Fi network for a long time...but today decided to add another network. The new one is not connected to the Internet , but is used to let my DAW communicate with my iPad...so I can control the Mac music software via the iPad.
Just started using V-Control and Touch OSC...both excellent apps...especially V-Control which works particularly well!
Isn't technology marvellous when it works?

Magnificent Mac
The transition to Mac Pro is now complete...everything works SO much better on the Mac.
Have completed three projects so far, two for external clients and all proceeded like clockwork.
Even with the same amount of ram that I had before it is working perfectly and not just the Mac either.
On Windows, my Tascam 1884 was a bit "iffy" on start up....but no problems on the Mac.
Some of the success is down to doing some homework before installing anything, making sure I had the correct software versions for all peripherals.
Here is a photo of happy composer at work...photo copyright courtesy of Clare Hines.

Migration
Today managed to get Apple Mac Pro.
Will be trying some of my music software on it, taking small steps at a time.
When convinced I can use my software/hardware under OS X....will relegate PC to slave machine/sample library.
Fingers crossed for smoothish transition...but have windows session to complete first!

Time for Update?
Currently weighing up the pros and cons of switching from PC to Mac Pro.
Main concern is being able to use my new hardware interface within Mac environment.
Think it will work under 32-bit operating system...but won't work under 64-bit!
Umm!

Over the last few days I've had great fun writing a TV ad for my London agents.
As usual..very short time scale involved, but still managed to get a great trumpet player for the session at short notice!
Will keep you informed of progress!

Production Work
I am delighted to reveal that I will be producing a CD for renowned Hurdy-Gurdy player Cliff Stapleton, starting in a few months time. A really exciting project that I am pleased to be involved with.
Session Work
I was asked recently to play a whistle/recorder part on a track for the new Jake Walton C.D.
I recorded it yesterday...and although a simple part..it took 98 takes for the whistle and about 70 takes for the recorder. Thankfully after all that effort, the client is delighted with the outcome!
Phew!!!!!!!!
